They have a huge potential for the generation of knowledge which can be transferred into market solutions and supply high-tech companies with skilled employees. Marie Curie Industry-Academia Partnerships and Pathways (IAPP)
CECMI is working on an EU-application seeking support to transfer know-how from research to industrial capabilities through the Marie Curie Industry-Academica Partnerships and Pathways. The theme for the project will be how to enable SME to create more Radical innovations – through innovation management.
The Project is carried out in association with with University of Aalborg (Denmark), Vysokou školou ekonomickou v Praze, Circle Line Associates (Switserland), Stemm Cell Pro (Czech Republic)
What is Marie Curie Industry-Academica Partnerships and Pathways ?
Marie Curie Industry-Academica Partnerships and Pathways is an EU program that provides financial support for transnational research for and by SMEs wishing to innovate and improve their competitiveness, by enhancing their investment in research activities to acquire new knowledge for growth in Europe’s knowledge-based economy.
Theme
Competition today on global perspective is becoming almost impossible for SMEs to try and compete individually. Therefore, in addition to developing their core competence base individually, enterprises have to be able to develop more open innovation and open for network-based innovation, particularly when the core knowledge and competencies needed to improve their performance are not available in-house. This is especially true for certain industries as for instance biotechnology as one of the strategic sectors of the European Union in regard to their competitivness.
Main potential sources of external competences are customers and suppliers, consultants and even competitors. Collaboration helps them find and open new markets, and obtain a better understanding of what is expected from them (Barclays 20029. Consequently, many European SME companies are finding themselves increasingly tied to other firms especially tied to big international companies. The challenge each of them they face is to adjust their own business model to meet their partners’ core competences so as to create a new and joint platform for collaboration and innovation. Otherwise they will just stay as simple suppliers or sub suppliers - easy to control and easy to compete with low price.
Our previous research and studies suggest it is useful not only to study the business model concept at the level of individual firms -, but even more important to European SME´s - also at that of the level of network. The network-based business model proposed can, and should be, tested on European scale survey supported by more in-depth case studies to develop concrete measures and tools to support SME and startups in their efforts to become more competitive. For that reason, we apply for Marie Curie Industry – Academia Partnerships and Pathways to support a project to carry out a research on a European basis. We also hope in this perspective to be able to draw more concrete conclusions regarding the global part of new network based business models. We believe, that it is important for European SME´s to learn about the potential hidden within the ‘network-based business model’ concept, which stresses the importance of collaboration, which eventually turns the ‘I’ into ‘WE’, and, as a result of that, into a collaborative innovation effort. Our case studies will provide real-life examples of how to leverage and form such network ties with the example of start-ups in the biotech industry in Denmark, Switzerland and the Czech Republic. The knowledge gained within this industry could then be easily transferred and adapted as well to other industries and life cycle of a company which will give to this project a broad impact.
